Green Smoothie for Toilet Trainees

Probably the single most overlooked preparation for toilet training involves diet; namely fibre intake - that's veggies, fruit, whole grains, nuts and legumes.

Aside from the obvious health benefits, adding fibre to your toilet trainee's diet is extra important to help keep them regular. A child with a fibre-rich diet is going to have less trouble passing number twos, less likelihood of pain or discomfort, and therefore a lower chance of developing an aversion to the potty or toilet

If you've got a fussy eater an easy trick is to serve up a daily green smoothy. Unlike us adults, kids tend to love the colour, especially if you give it a fun name (Hulk Juice/Ogre Slime/Green Lantern/Magic Potion) and they're delicious too.

Jenny from Foodbox has kindly developed this simple and delicious green smoothy recipe. It's chock full of soluble and insoluble fibre and, best of all, her little toilet trainee gives it the big thumbs up, as does my Mr 4. We've teamed up with Foodbox to give away an Appetizer Food Box and a set of Tinkle Time Potty Stickers at the end of this month! Enter on our competition page.

Jenny's Green Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup of torn green leaves. Kale or spinach are perfect as they have a mild taste for green smoothie newbies.
  • 3/4 cup of almond milk to give it a yummy nutty taste. I have an almond allergy so I substitute soy milk with great success.
  • 1/4 cup of coconut milk or coconut cream
  • 1/2 a banana. It's important to use a ripe one to reap the fibre benefits.

Simply blitz it all in a blender or bullet until it's nice and smooth - it's that easy! You may like to make it extra appealing by serving in a special cup or glass with a straw or try Jenny's arrangement with nuts like the picture above.
